HGV Medical

The law requires HGV drivers to be in reasonably good health in order to legally operate a commercial vehicle. With the medical test needing to be carried out every time that your licence is up for renewal, it can be a frustrating process. An up to date medical assessment is an essential part of keeping your Group 2 licence valid. We at Manchester Medical can offer you a comprehensive service that will help you to apply for your licence swiftly.

We are located in two convenient locations around Manchester; Manchester Airport and Didsbury. Our qualified staff are on hand to provide you with a convenient service to suit you. We are proud to be able to offer our clients a convenient and easy to use service that is adaptable to your schedule. We can often see our clients at short notice, meaning that you are able to implement your licence application quickly and avoid significant waits at your local GPs.

It is important to note that our doctors are not assessing your medical ability to drive; that is solely down the the DVLA. Their decision is based on the medical evidence that we provide from your examination. Your medical examination will be carried out by a trained, GMC (General Medical Council) registered doctor, who has over 10 years of experience in a professional setting. The exam should take no longer than 30 minutes as our professional staff are experienced and efficient.

The test will centre around your completed D4 form. We ask our customers to download and fill in a D4 form from our website and bring it to the assessment with them. It is imperative that you do this, as the examination can not go ahead without it. The assessment will involve a blood pressure test, a vision test and a urine sample will be screened for diabetes. Other criteria that the medical assessment will look at will include general wellbeing (both physically and mentally), signs of neurological conditions (such as Parkinson’s or epilepsy) sleep disorders, and any pre-existing conditions. It is vital that you are completely open and honest with the doctor performing the exam as any incorrect information could later invalidate your insurance and licence. Any relevant, future medical changes must be reported to the DVLA as they could require further assessment or disqualify you from driving.

After your exam, the practitioner will sign and stamp your D4 form. This will then be ready to be sent to the DVLA for assessment. Again, it is crucial to understand that our GMC professionals are not qualified to determine if you are fit to drive. Once your assessment is finished, you can send your D4 form directly to the DVLA for appraisal.
